International Balanced
We receive many complaints and there is much confusion about Brunton's
claim of an International Balanced compass needle.
It is widely assumed that International Balancing means that the compass
will work at any geographic latitude.
According to Brunton, International Balancing means that the compass will
perform properly at any longitude within a specific range.
This is misleading because compass balance is affected by the Earth's magnetic dip
angle which mainly varies with latitude, not longitude.
Brunton offers three models each balanced for a specific region: Northern, Central,
and Southern latitudes.
We only stock the model balanced for the Nothern latitudes and Brunton
does not offer free rebalancing, but rather charges $40
to rebalance the compass.
